There are hotels… and then there are hotels. Founded in 1902; The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection is New York’s oldest hotel – and the first to allow women to stay alone. Revered by literary icons, novelists and creatives alike, the iconic venue is an immersion of art, history and culture from wall to wall. Winning the 2024 Conde Nast Traveler Readers Choice Award as one of the best hotels in America; my recent stay was nothing short of spectacular – and here’s why.
The hotel:
Infamous as a melting pot for literacy elites, the hotel was a favourite for the Founder and Editor of The New Yorker, one of the most influential publications in the world, and the birthplace of broadway smash hit My Fair Lady – to name yet a few. Still a hotspot for notables, another VIP guest is ‘The Algonquin Cat’, a friendly feline with it’s own instagram, often seen lazing about the lobby.
Architecturally, old world charm lures you in – the exquisite column detailing, the marble benchtops, the stark white tiled floors… every inch, every crevice, every space has been intentionally designed to transport you to yesteryear; while still maintaining a modern day touch. It’s thoughtful, it’s stylish and it’s classy – just the way we like it.
The Location:
In the heart of Times Square, The Algonquin Hotel, Autograph Collection is perfectly situated for every traveller: for the broadway lovers, you’re doors away from countless shows. For the shoppers, you’re meters from the iconic Madison Ave and 5th Avenue, and only a credit card swipe away from a new Saint Laurent, Gucci, Prada, and / or Chanel. Grand Central, Central Park and the Empire State are within walking distance too, so whatever you have planned, you’re in the right place.
The suite:
After riding the shiny gold elevator up to your floor, you’ll be greeted by a warm, stylish and spacious suite – yes, even in New York. What really stands out here though are the quaint finishings – the antique corded telephone (which actually works); the luxury coffee table books, moody lighting – it’s a vibe.
The Blue Bar Restaraunt and Lounge
Last but definitely not least, the boutique Blue Bar Restaurant and Lounge. Where else will you go, dolled up to the nines, before swanning about New York – maybe you’re off to a must see Broadway show, or maybe you’re channelling your inner Sarah Jessica Parker and shopping till you drop on 5th Avenue – it would be rude not to, right?
Not your standard menu (nothing at The Algonquin Hotel, Autograph Collection is standard, to be fair), the cocktail list sounds more like a list of literary icons than list of drinks – Dorothy Parker, The Hamlet, Hemingway Daquari. Even here – you are transported back in time, yet again, connecting to history with every sip. As I wasn’t drinking alcohol during my stay; I can’t tell you which was best, so you’ll just have to find out yourself.
After your beverage, look forward to crunchy truffle fries, fresh fish tacos with guac, or a classic NY strip steak.. Or all three. For me, on my detox, I relished in their Harvest Salad… fresh greenery, roasted butternut squash, crumbled feta, crushed walnuts, with a drizzle of balsamic.. heaven. Paired with grilled chicken, it was the perfect balance to the less balanced options across the city.
In the morning, whether you’re in holiday mood or health mood, breakfast is a treat. Acai bowl with gluten free granola and shaved coconut? Can do. Organic smoked salmon atop hand rolled bagel, with a lashing of cream cheese? Sure. Full blown continental brekkie with pastries, vegan coconut yoghurt and fruit? That too. It’s all on offer… in true New York style.
Final words
For an unforgettable stay in New York, one that makes you feel like the Queen you are, The Algonquin Hotel Times Square, Autograph Collection, needs to be part of the trip. And when you do arrive, you’ll agree: this may be your first visit, but definitely not your last.
