The Future of Fitness

How AI is making fitness easier than ever

From tracking devices telling us how much sleep we’ve had (thanks Oura), to our Apple watches reminding us to move (thanks Apple); the seemingly unrelated worlds of tech, AI and wellbeing are now fusing together – and we are the lucky winners. Not only do we have even greater awareness – with objective data – as to our daily habits and how they impact our bodies, but we have an awareness (and sometimes even guidance from AI) as to what to do next. This space is only just beginning to unfold – and to help us understand more, we interviewed global AI evangelist Amanda Johnstone, CEO of Transhuman, Time Next Generation Leader, LinkedIn Top Voice in AI and CEO Magazine Startup Executive of the Year.

For those new to the AI space, can you explain, in simple terms, how AI, health and fitness are coming together?
The convergence of AI with health and fitness is characterised by the “Internet of You” (IoY) – the collection and analysis of personal health metrics, such as voice patterns, keystroke dynamics, walking gait, sleep quality, heart rate and oxygen levels and more. AI leverages this data to tailor health and fitness advice – for example, on your Fitbit or Apple watch.

How can we use AI to reach our health and fitness goals easier?
AI can be trained to consider varied factors like exercise habits, diet, and genetic information to offer bespoke guidance, based on evidence-based research. This is then complemented by the expertise of professionals like Doctors, Nutritionists and Personal Trainers, and refined over time as it learns more about you and your daily habits.

Are there any emerging technologies that are currently being developed, that will make reaching our goals even easier?
Precision health is rapidly advancing. Implantables and ingestibles are joining wearables and scannables to obtain detailed health data. Some include:

  • Smart toilets that track pH, ketone and vitamin C levels.
  • Mirrors that use contactless optical imagery and remote photoplethysmography to gauge both mental well-being and physical metrics such as blood pressure, BMI, facial skin age and HRV.
  • Elo Smart Gummies are formulated based on IoY data. They have 389 million possible combinations of nutrients and are tailor-made using 3D printing technology.

If there is ONE AI tool every woman in Australia needs, what is it?
I use menstrual health app Clue app, which synthesises data from my Aura ring, Apple Watch and manual input to provide menstrual cycle insights.
